We are very pleased to share an important new ISRS clinical guidelines publication with our global, interprofessional community!
These guidelines providing ISRS recommendations for the management of symptomatic brain radiation necrosis after stereotactic radiosurgery have been published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (Red Journal) and are now available in PubMed.
First and corresponding author Dr. Balamurugan Vellayappan commented:
"We acknowledge that radiation necrosis is clinically challenging to diagnose and manage. We therefore undertook a systematic review to summarize the available evidence, and their limitations, of the commonly used management modalities. Importantly, we proposed a scale to grade the severity of radiation necrosis and the recommended management strategies based on the severity. We hope that this guideline is useful for the practitioners managing these patients”.
Senior author and Chair of the ISRS Guidelines Committee, Dr. Arjun Sahgal provides a summary of the guidelines in the following video and commented:
"This is a comprehensive summary of the management of radiation necrosis which is increasing in incidence as radiosurgery dominates the management of brain metastases. A novel grading system is also proposed with management options to enable standardization."
