We are very proud to share the most recent ISRS Guidelines published in the journal Neurosurgery in July: Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Intermediate (III) or High (IV-V) Spetzler-Martin Grade Arteriovenous Malformations: International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society Practice Guideline
ISRS Vice President Prof. Jason Sheehan, from University of Virginia in Charlottesville, USA, and co-author on this guideline emphasized the importance of the guidelines published by the ISRS.
"I believe the guidelines really provide a framework, a foundation by which individuals can practice in a relatively consistent fashion based upon the evidence that is currently available. The guidelines continue to be updated, and they have reached some of the highest impact factor journals in our field, including Lancet journal Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Journal of Neuro-Oncology. These guidelines are really high impact science, and they provide a primer, if you will, to individuals who are coming into the field. And for those who want an update. Reading those guidelines can provide an update on all the information, some of which they may have seen, but some of which they may have missed."
Lead author, Dr. Christopher S Graffeo, describes the results from their systemic data review:
“Although the accessible data are somewhat heterogeneous and low certainty, they do nevertheless support the overall conclusion that radiosurgery is a very safe and effective treatment strategy for intermediate and high-grade AVMs with a long-term risk-benefit profile that is likely more favorable than resection or observation without treatment.“
All ISRS guidelines are available online.
